Really dug this episode. I thought the point that the personality type that jumps through the hoops to become a practicing psychologist would see anti-authoritarianism as a disorder was particularly insightful. Good stuff, kids.

LOL, you are a living example of why the ancients thought women were unfit for political office. (That's a good thing.) I think that Antigone Darling's message had an impact on Adam because he canceled the crazy armed carry march. He seems to have some common sense too. Instead he is now calling for 50 marches to the state capitols. I don't hold out much hope for his idea to try to persuade the Feds to stop the imperialist insanity before the economy really crashes, but he has a valid point about how bad things could get when their empire crashes of its own weight. The former Soviet Union went away in a fairly peaceful way because people stopped believing in it hard enough to kill everyone who disagreed. It would be nice if the same thing could happen in the DC, but I think that the fact that they are so much better at the mixed economy version of Fascism then the Soviets were at centrally planned socialism will induce them to think it might be worth killing for.

I don't like the idea of duty, much like I dislike the idea of loyalty. We discussed loyalty in a previous episode and I still don't think it's a virtue. I don't even like the concept of being loyal to liberty or having a duty to do outreach, be winsome, etc. The only duty I have is to myself and other voluntary obligations. I'm down with that!

That was a very interesting commentary on the July 4th loaded carry march. Between the three of you all my own misgivings were brought up. I think more ought to be said about the whole concept of duty in relation to individualism. I usually take duty to mean an obligation imposed by others, and a voluntary obligation is the ideal. Obviously, some individualists still believe in the concept of duty to a cause. That might not be a bad thing, but it is completely an emotional reaction, one that we probably all share to some extent.

As someone who doesn't really identify as a libertarian, I thought this was an interesting episode. Certainly an alternative viewpoint compared to what you're hearing elsewhere, and valuable for that reason alone. I definitely felt Antigone was a little more intellectually honest about it all than the Free Talk host, who really seemed to be trying to shoehorn her story into some kind of preconceived narrative.

I am working my way through back episodes as I have time.

This was a particularly good episode. Lots of wisdom here. While I have been involved in a few activities with Mike, for example the Thanksgiving food brigade, I have not gotten to know him. If the opportunity comes up I would like to change that.

My wife Alicia and I came across the book The Five Love Languages and found it helpful. While we had figured most of it out over the years it was good to read and discuss it together. It would have been nice to have read it earlier in our relationship.

In long term relationships it is good to occasionally step out of the flow of everyday activities and really engage in intimate intercourse, and I am not referring to sexual intercourse although that is also a wonderful and important thing. Reading a book such as this together can help facilitate that. That is also why we have attended marriage workshops a couple of times even though we were not having any serious problems. We then ended up helping to run a couple of them which had a similar effect on us as being involved as attendees.

Mike's discussion of culture corresponds with my understanding of it. Barring significantly low intelligence or real mental illness, probably the most important thing in a person's success is the culture they have absorbed. By success I am not referring to or at least not only to financial success but achieving whatever the person views as a good life. The same is true for a society.

Also a good discussion of forgiveness. I agree that English is deficient in words for the varieties of what we refer to as forgiveness. Also Christianity, does not require someone to be a doormat. Alicia would be better than I to explain this but it is more complicated than that. I grew up in a Roman Catholic family and while I never really felt that god was real I did absorb a lot of culture or values that I think are positive. There are Christians who understand the religion and express it in their lives in a way that helps them be a better person for themselves and others around them and there are other "Christians" for whom that is not the case. Alicia is Christian and as she would put it they are not following Christ. For details contact her, she teaches Bible study and is the family biblical scholar. :-)

I completely agree with Celestina around 20 minutes. I also cannot look at people as numbers.

Loving the conversation about paying for beer and food at a party. That is SO how the liberty community in NH used to be (or perhaps still is, I haven't been to a party in awhile).

Instead of, "Hey, dude, nice camaro...Wanna be friends?" just change it up a little. Example: "Hey, girl, nice breasts...Wanna be friends?" I just made that up, so it's not real-world tested. Try it out and let me know how it goes.
